Understanding Reptile Parasites

UNDERSTANDING REPTILE PARASITES BY ROGER KLINGENBER D.V.M.

There are very few books pertaining to the medical aspects of reptile husbandry that are reasonably priced and readily available to the average hobbyist. This book, written by an experienced herp vet with both novice and advanced keepers in mind, is one of the few. Understanding Reptile Parasites, published by AVS is a concise and easy to follow text outlining the basic principles of reptile parasites in both wild and captive animals.

Although parasites are rarely a problem in this age of predominately captive born and bred reptiles, this book nonetheless serves as an ideal primer for understanding parasite life cycles, diagnosis, and treatment. Dr. Klingenberg has done a wonderful job of appealing to all levels of reptile keepers by presenting technical information in a straight forward manner, comprehendible to even those without a background in the biological sciences.

All gamuts of the subject are covered in detail within this book. Information regarding signs and symptoms, treatment, diagnostic procedures, and hygiene are all included. Additionally, the book is complete with a number of photographs to compliment the text, as well as a thorough (but slightly outdated) formulary of medications, applications, and dosages.

Of particular interest are the chapters pertaining to whether or not treatment is actually necessary. As a seasoned professional in the field, the author is well aware of the over treatment of reptiles for parasites by misinformed vets and hobbyists alike. This issue is addressed and well explained here.

This book is by no means a replacement for veterinary treatment. If you suspect that your pet is ill, it should always be examined by a qualified individual prior to any sort of treatment. However, this book will help you to understand reptile parasites, which may in turn allow you to form a more appropriate therapeutic plan with the assistance of a veterinarian.

Overall, this book is highly recommended for anyone interested in reptile medicine, parasitology, and for advanced hobbyists interested in screening their own animals. Paperback, 82 pages, illustrated throughout. This book is in stock and available at LLLReptile.com for only $6.59! Quantities are limited, so order your copy today!
