Chameleons - Natures Hidden Jewels

CHAMELEONS: NATURE’S HIDDEN JEWELS By Petr Necas

This landmark work represents the second edition of this book in English. Nearly 10 years has passed since it’s original publication, and in that time the author has done a tremendous amount of research on these animals and expanded greatly on the original text.

One of the most notable aspects of this book (and other books by Mr. Necas) is the accuracy of the facts and attention to detail. Taxonomically speaking, this book is as current as one can get. Nearly all living species are represented, including full classifications for each. Interestingly, this book also includes previous classifications as well as discussions regarding why said animals were re-named.

The first portion of the book covers every caveat of chameleon biology, anatomy, and physiology. Reproduction (both in the wild and in captivity) is covered in detail, as are color-change mechanics, behavioral caveats, and much more!

Nearly the entire second half of this book is dedicated to specific species profiles. Full Latin names are given, as are common names, identification tips, range and habitat information, and captive care notes. Additionally, most species are represented by a number of excellent color photos.

The appendices of this book are superb as well. You will find complete lists of every chameleon species, both fossil and recent, as well as quick reference charts with data on habitat, reproduction, and size for many species. The book wraps up with an extremely thorough bibliography.

This book is geared towards the serious chameleon fan, but will no doubt be enjoyed by anyone who takes the time to flip through it’s pages. I wouldn’t call this work a captive care book, but instead more like an encyclopedia of the family Chameleonidae.

Overall, this book has no shortcomings. It is as well done and complete as a book can be. For anyone interested in chameleons, both wild and captive, I give this book my highest recommendation!

Hard bound, 380 glossy pages, and hundreds of full color photos and drawings. High quality, German binding will last a lifetime. This book is currently out of print, but check back as it does pop up from time to time!
