A Review of "Reptiles" Magazine

REPTILES MAGAZINE Published by BowTie Inc.

This month we are not looking at a book, or even a series of books, but instead at a publication that has had perhaps a greater influence on me as a reptile enthusiast than any other single source. I am talking about REPTILES magazine, a monthly publication now in it’s 14th year, that has a lot to offer to the open-minded reader.

Those of us who have been in the hobby for a while have seen our fair share of reptile related magazines come and go. Some were around for a while, others only briefly, but nonetheless, one publication, REPTILES, has stood the test of time.

Some advanced hobbyists feel that REPTILES contains only basic and beginner information, but this is not the case. Over the years the magazine has battled this stereotype by publishing a variety of articles on rare animals, as well as those best suited for only the most experienced keepers.

Every month, REPTILES offers articles on captive care of turtles, tortoises, lizards, snakes, and amphibians. Although some issues are "speciality" issues - concentrating on a specif type of reptile - the overall variety contained in the magazine is great. In my massive collection of back issues, I can likely find an article or at least a mentioning of every species I have ever encountered.

In addition to husbandry articles, they also regularly feature pieces on conservation, natural history, health, interviews, and other topics pertaining to reptiles and related animals. The writing is always excellent, and the contributing authors are experts in their fields.

In addition to featured articles, there are regular monthly columns including Veterinarian Q&A, Ask the Breeder, Who’s Who, classifieds, and much, much more. Every issue is full of color photos, a centerfold poster, and contain around 80 pages!

Whether you are a budding hobbyist, or an advanced herp enthusiast, I highly encourage you to pick up an issue and read it cover to cover. If your like me, and have an insatiable appetite for all things reptiles, then you simply won’t be disappointed!
