THE BIOLOGY, HUSBANDRY AND HEALTH CARE OF REPTILES

This month I am going to introduce you all to a 3 set volume that no reptile keeper should be without. These books are admittedly not new (published in 1993), but the vast majority of pertinent information remains accurate and up-to-date.

All together these books contain nearly 1000 pages of information all presented in a clear and concise manner. Full color photos are found throughout, with additional charts, graphs, etc. The books were compiled and edited by Lowell Ackerman DVM, and he contributed numerous chapters within. However, literally dozens of other qualified authors have contributed chapters covering the topics in which they are experts. In addition, brief biographical data and contact information is provided for each contributing author. Each chapter ends with a detailed list of references for further reading.

Volume 1 (Biology) covers reptilian anatomy, physiology, and ecology. This volume is quite similar to the texts required for introductory level herpetology classes. The information in this volume is rather technical, and very specific, but with a little thought and cross referencing, anyone should be able to make sense of the concepts presented.

Volume 2 (Husbandry) is the shortest of the 3 volumes at approximately 200 pages. This is not a shortcoming however, as the information is presented clearly and is more than complete. Volume 2 provides a wide overview of the basic techniques and concepts of modern herpeteculture. Although there is some species-specific care information, this book is best viewed as a general overview.

Volume 3 (Health Care) is by far the largest and perhaps most beneficial of the 3 volumes. Within you will find information pertaining to the symptoms, etiology, diagnoses, and treatment of many common and rare health problems encountered in reptiles. Everything is covered from technique to theory, again with references given and with each chapter being authored by experts within the field.

Although the information provided is certainly enough to help you recognize when your reptiles are sick, you will most likely still require the aid of a qualified herp vet for medications requiring prescriptions as well as for surgical procedures. Nonetheless, it gives you much insight into what is happening to your animals and may help you in leading your vet to an accurate diagnoses.

Highlights of volume 3 include chapters on reproductive disorders and treatments, general surgical technique, parasites, therapeutics/nursing, and a thorough drug formulary (current as of 1993). The only real shortcoming of this series would be the length of time since it was released. Yet as I stated earlier, most of the data still applies perfectly today (the major exception being drug dosages) and these books remain among my most often referenced in my library. You may find more recent books, but none will compare to this in terms of cost. Volume 1 is $79.95, volume 2 is $49.95, and volume 3 is $89.95. Or you can purchase the entire set for only $195!

Though the price tag may seem hefty, I highly recommend the entire set. These books have a place on my shelf and they may be the most used reptile books I own. Another reason for considering all 3 is that the table of contents and index are all inclusive, meaning that the index is the same in the back of all three books, and you may be referred to any page in any of the volumes. Also, the authors often refer to other chapters which may not even be in the volume you are reading.

These books are all hard bound, with glossy paper and clear photos. You will not be disappointed with these books. I know there is a spot on your bookcase just waiting for this set! You can order it today at www.lllreptile.com or by calling 760-439-8492 during normal business hours.
